"Sunflower 7" ©2010 by Jessica Monroe

ManicHaus, Modern Art Space, is proud to present a solo exhibition by painter, Jessica Monroe, on view at ManicHaus in McAllen, from August 13 through 27, 2010. An opening reception will be held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 2010. ManicHaus is located at 1301-B, North Main Street in McAllen. Admission is free.

“My work deals with the balance of complementary forces (ex. male/female, structure/non-structure, similarity/difference) which is fundamental in the nature of all things,” Monroe said.  “In these paintings, I explore the relationship between the structural grid and the more fluid “characters” depicted in the image. The grid mirrors our own cultural need for structure though language, social hierarchies and networks, while the less defined movement of light and color represents those aspects of life both integral and indescribable.

Kirk Clark was born in McAllen, Texas, to Charles and Dorothy Clark. His parents’ enthusiastic collecting, and involvement in the contemporary art scene, greatly influenced their son. “Pillars and Brackets” by Lawrence Lange Sept. 4-18

aobmpl-010 ©2008 lawrence lange

ManicHaus, Modern Art Space, is proud to present “Pillars and Brackets,” a solo exhibition by Houston artist, Lawrence Lange, on view at ManicHaus in McAllen, from September 4 to September 18, 2009.  A reception will be held during from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on September 4, 2009. ManicHaus is located at 1301-B, North Main Street in McAllen.  Admission is free.

“The act of making becomes an inscription of memory. Not unlike the pen etching paper and soaking ink into the surface, or the pencil incising and leaving it’s mark behind,” Lange said.

Born and raised in Chicago Illinois Lawrence Lange has possessed a strong passion for art, design, architecture and theory since a young age.  Following a number of years of education, travel, and work, Lawrence struggled with the rigidity of working in the 9-5 design world and began painting abstract works as a means to reconcile this struggle.

Always interested in the process and method of creation his work has become strongly sequence or process driven. With a background in architecture, the elements of line, scale, and weight were the primary means of composition.  Utilizing a limited set of tools he began painting with wire and blades as a means to investigate the merger of line and form. This work is the culmination of that investigation.

Gallery hours are: Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 6pm.  Please call 956-207-0940 or e-mail: manichaus@gmail.com for more information.  ManicHaus is a 2008-09 McAllen Arts Council grant recipient.  Art classes are available as well.

ManicHaus, Modern Art Space, is proud to present “Experimental Procedures,” a solo exhibition by Phyllis Evans will be on view at ManicHaus in McAllen, from July 10-24, 2009.  A reception will be held during from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 10, 2009. ManicHaus is located at 1301-B, North Main Street in McAllen.  Admission is free.

“I draw much of my artistic inspiration from the work of the Surrealists, who defied rationality and combined seemingly incongruous elements often using chance occurrence and automatic thinking process,” Evans said.  “My process of working with digital media disallows a truly automatic or subconscious approach to my work, but I try to be as instinctive as I can and rely as much as possible on my subconscious whims when making my initial reactions, selections and choices.”

My affinity for the work of Frida Kahlo fuels my work for I share her “black sense of humor,” and her “taste for the gothically shocking.” Kahlo also referenced medical texts in her paintings, “to explain the mechanical part of the whole business” as she sought to come to terms with her physical condition and the medical treatments she endured. Like Kahlo, I frequently combine mechanical and organic forms, emphasizing the most unpleasant aspects of both.

“Echoing Kahlo’s distrust of the machine, my own strange hybrids of suggests to the viewer something ominous and draws upon our collective anxieties in a world where potential biological catastrophes loom large, where good science is halted by irrationality, and where bad science is encouraged by the market place, in our current political climate in which ethics go largely ignored,” Evans commented.
